Best movies for 2013

2013 looks set to be an awesome year with many new exciting movies coming our way. With so many new family friendly movies hitting the cinemas this year, we’ve decided to categorise the movies into 3 broad categories so you know what to expect in the coming year. Here are the best movies for 2013!

Classic Disney movies

The classic fairy-tales which Disney has become so famous for are making a big comeback this year. Keep a lookout for ‘The Little Mermaid’ opening on September 13th. This classic animated Disney movie will now be given the 3D treatment in 2013. There are also rumours of a Cinderalla movie reportedly starring Amanda Seyfried and Cate Blanchett opening this year as well.

 

Sequels

There are numerous sequels to popular animated movies to look forward to in 2013. Kids will be overjoyed to know that sequels coming out this year include the prequel to Monster’s Inc, ‘Monster’s University (June 21st)’, ‘The Smurfs 2, (June 31st)’. Although not confirmed, it is also rumoured that ‘Karate Kid 2’  and ‘Yogi Bear 2’ might be hitting the cinemas this year as well.

New films

There will also be some exciting new offerings in 2013. Some films to watch out for include the 3D animated family comedy, ‘Escape from Planet Earth’ which will be released on February 14th. Another film to take notice of is an upcoming animated film ‘Dorothy of Oz’ based on the classic book by Roger Stanton Baum.

Now that you know the types of movies which will be dominating the box office this year, we’ve decided to come up with a list of 10 movies you should definitely catch. The large array of films being released this year has made it an arduous task in trying to narrow the list down but thankfully, we’ve managed to do so in the end. Here are 10 family friendly movies which seem worthy of a trip to the cinema this year and definitely the best movies for 2013.

10. The Little Mermaid

The re-release of classic Disney films in 2012 such as ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ have proven to be an incredibly smart move as both films went on to enjoy huge success at the box office. Encouraged by the success, Disney has decided to revive ‘The Little Mermaid’ and give it the 3D treatment. The animated film is slated for release in September later this year.

A whole new generation of kids will once again be introduced to this classic film featuring memorable Disney characters such as Princess Ariel and the evil seawitch Ursula. The fairytale tells the story of how Ariel, a mermaid falls in love with a prince after rescuing him from a storm and her thrilling adventures as she tries to save her father’s kingdom. A winner of 2 Academy Awards back in 1989, this Disney classic is a must watch for the whole family!

 

 

 

 

9. Escape from Planet Earth

Release date: February 14th

Cast: Brendan Fraser, Jessica Alba, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rob Corddry, William Shatner, George Lopez

Featuring an all star cast of Hollywood superstars such as Brendan Fraser and Jessica Alba, this animated film about space pilots and aliens looks set to be an out of this world adventure. Directed by Cal Brunker, this film seems promising based on Cal’s past works which include the smash hit ‘Despicable Me’. Definitely a film which you should take note of.

8. Dorothy of Oz

Release date: 2013

Cast: Lea Michele, Martin Short, Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart

The Land of Oz is making a huge mark on 2013 with 2 movies set in the fantasy world of Oz being released this year. Adults can look forward to the Raimi directed ‘Wizard of Oz’ prequel starring James Franco. Meanwhile, kids can check out the animated film, ‘Dorothy of Oz’. ‘Dorothy of Oz’ follows the adventures of Dorothy when she is brought back to Oz to save her beloved friends;The Scarecrow, Tin Man and Formerly-Cowardly Lion. The film is based on the classic book by Roger Stanton Baum and should be a big hit with the kids.

 

 

 

 

7. Despicable Me 2

Release Date: June 27th

Cast: Steve Carell, Russell Brand, Miranda Cosgrove, Al Pacino, Moisés Arias, Kristen Wiig, Steve Coogan, Ken Jeong

Despicable Me released in 2010 was a huge success, scoring with both audiences and critics. The sequel will hopefully live up to its predecessors. Featuring even more outrageous characters including a new enemy played by Al Pacino, this movie is a sure treat for the entire family.

 

 

6. Jack the Giant Slayer

Release date: March 1st

Cast: Nicholas Hoult, Eleanor Tomlinson, Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane, Bill Nighy and Ewan McGregor

If animated films are not your thing, then give this film a shot. Containing elements from the ‘Jack and the beanstalk’ fairy tale, this modern day fairy tale follows the adventure of a farm boy called Jack as he journeys to a land filled with giants in order to save a kidnapped princess. Judging from the trailer, this blockbuster seems like a great popcorn movie featuring epic battle scenes between humans and giants and breath-taking special effects.

 

 

 

 

 

5. The Croods

Release date: March 22 (USA)

Cast: Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener, Emma Stone

This animated movie produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by 20th Century Fox seems pretty promising. Featuring the voice talents of Hollywood hunk Ryan Reynolds and rising star Emma Stone, this film follows the adventure of a caveman voiced by Nicolas Cage as he goes on an unexpected adventure with his family after an earthquake destroys his home and forces them to venture into the unknown.

 

4. Monster’s University

Release date: June 21st

Cast: Billy Crstal, John Goodman

The prequel to the 2001 smash hit Monsters Inc, everyone’s favourite monsters are back in this animated film. Produced by Pixar and distributed my Disney, this prequel which finally arrives in our cinemas 12 years after the original film should be worth the wait. The movie takes place 10 years before the events of Monsters Inc. An interesting concept, the film explores the exploits of Mike and Sully during their days in the University of Fear as they learn to become scarers.

 

 

 

 

 

 

3. Frozen

Release date: November 27th

Cast: Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff

This project has hit so many hurdles but is finally seeing the light this year. Disney’s highly anticipated take on the Hans Christian Andersen’s classic book, The Snow Queen is definitely one to look out for. This family friendly animated flick follows the adventures of a young girl and a mountain climber as they embark on a perilous adventure in search of the Snow Queen in order to put a stop to the winter prophecy which has covered their kingdom.

2. Planes

Release date: August 9th

Cast: Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett, Chug Carlos Alazraqui

After the huge success of the 2006 smash hit ‘Cars’ and its 2011 sequel, Disney has decided to roll out ‘Planes’, a spin-off off Cars. The animated movie tells the tale of how Dusty, a big-hearted, fast-flying crop duster manages to qualify for a prestigious and thrilling air race. Disney movies are usually a hit with the children and this film should not be an exception.

 

 

 

 

 

 

1. The Smurfs 2

Release date: July 31st

Cast: Hank Azaria, Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofía Vergara, Katy Perry, George Lopez, Alan Cumming

Everyone’s favourite blue smurfs are back! The original cast including funny man Neil Patrick Harris and pop superstar Katy Perry are all back for this sequel which looks set to make a big impact at the box office later this year. If your kids enjoy the first film, then catching this sequel should definitely be on your to do list this year. There is even talk of a Smurfs 3 being released in 2015!
