How to make playdoh at home

Everyone has heard of Playdoh and most all children love it. You can play with it for hours and mold the clay to look like anything you want. It is a great pass time to keep the kids busy. Instead of just going out and buying some, try making some at home with your kids. That will be a great way to get involved with them and discuss things that may be going on in school. Making Playdoh at home is very easy and does not require many ingredients.

Ingredients you’ll need
You will need 1/2 cup of salt, 1/2 cup of water and 1 cup of flour. Also have some food coloring of your choice around to make different colors. A medium mixing bowl is also needed for mixing the ingredients together.

Step-by-step process
First you will want to cover your working surface with newspaper to keep things from getting too messy. Then measure out 1 cup of flour and add it to the bowl. You may want to break up any clumps that may be in there. Pour the 1/2 cup of salt in with the flour and finally add the 1/2 cup of water. Now the best way to mix this is with your hands. Mix the ingredients just until they are not watery or floury. Then add any color of food coloring you want. This part is recommended to use a spoon. Plastic spoons work the best because they wash off easier. Keep adding color until the desired color is made.

You’re finished. Now if the dough is too sticky then just knead in small amounts of flour till it is a nice soft consistency. This is the basic recipe that works well with kids. There are several other variances you can choose to use.

An alternative version
Another version has you adding some cream of tartar to the mix and boiling it on the stove. This is a good recipe if an adult is making the playdoh to use in craft for an important project. But please use caution if using this recipe with children, the dough has to get to a boiling point in order for the ingredients to mix properly.

Add Kool-aid to mix
One of the recipes that can really make some colorful and good smelling playdoh is adding Kool-aid to the mixture. The kool-aid will give it bright vibrant colors and some delicious smells also. Please be careful with this recipe because the pieces are small and smell good small children may think they are candy. Even though this is non-toxic the pieces could get stuck in their throat and cause problems.

Safety first
Making anything at home with your children can always be fun. Even if it is messy, but always use good judgment around children. Make sure there is nothing around that could hurt them and always teach your children proper safety when cooking or using sharp objects. This will allow you to be able to have the most fun with them and not always worry about them. These are the times your kids will remember the most. And you will have memories that will last a lifetime.
